Northwest Coast Narratives

Explore Indigenous worldviews through hands-on learning about the connections between land, sea, people, and the art of the Northwest Coast. This program aims to:

  • Engage students on the integral role stories play within Indigenous cultures of the Northwest Coast

  • Highlight how the media also plays a role in telling stories, and both the positive and negative impact that has for Indigenous peoples

  • Introduce students to the integral roles people, land, and animals play in the interconnectedness of our world

Curriculum

*Please note that, with concerns of COVID-19, a virtual option is offered for each education program for a flat rate of $150.00.

Each program reflects age-appropriate subjects and ideas and are connected to the BC Curriculum.


Grade 4:

  1. The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people, and communities of Canada. 

  2. Interactions between First Peoples and Europeans lead to conflict and cooperation, which continues to shape Canada’s identity. 

  3. Demographic changes in North America created shifts in economic and political power. 

  4. British Columbia followed a unique path in becoming a part of Canada.

Grade 5:

  1. Canada’s policies and treatment of minority peoples have negative and positive legacies. 

  2. Natural resources continue to shape the economy and identity of different regions of Canada. 

  3. Immigration and multiculturalism continue to shape Canadian society and identity. 

  4. Canadian institutions and government reflect the challenge of our regional diversity. 

Grade 6: 

  1. Economic self-interest can be a significant cause of conflict among peoples and governments.

  2. Complex global problems require international cooperation to make difficult choices for the future. 

  3. Systems of government vary in their respect for human rights and freedoms.

  4. Media sources can both positively and negatively affect our understanding of important events and issues.
