Sharon Fortney

Dr. Sharon Fortney is an Indigenous curator and researcher who specializes in Coast Salish material culture. She is of Klahoose and German ancestry. Her earlier research focused on coiled basketry – in memory of her grandmothers. She has her PhD in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia. Her thesis, Forging New Partnerships: Coast Salish Communities and Museums (2009) explored the changing relationships and motivations of Coast Salish communities and individuals to participate in museum representations. She is currently Associate Curator at the Museum of Vancouver.
Intangible
Sharon was the co-curator of Intangible: Memory and Innovation in Coast Salish Art. Contemporary Coast Salish art is embedded within a traditional cultural framework that includes community, ceremonial life, territory, history and innovation.
