Sesemiya Tracy Williams

Squamish
Weaving

Sesemiya is a member of the Squamish Nation and has been weaving for more than a decade. She has learned from weavers in communities found throughout the Lower Mainland, and in Washington State, but is also somewhat self-taught, studying ancestral weavings in museum collections. She conducts experiments with local plant, animal and mineral resources to (re)discover recipes for dyes, greases and paints, which she uses in her own weavings and shares within her community.

Sesemiya strongly believes that art can happen anywhere, and has warped up everything from tree branches in the Elaho Valley to chain link fences at the Urban Weavers Studio on the Downtown Eastside. Her work is linked to her family teachings, respect for traditional territory, and personal creativity. She believes in listening to, and learning from, the land.
